Samantha Krill is a painter based in Troy, New York.

Samantha’s paintings explore identity, intimacy, and femininity through figurative portraiture. She combines observed figures with imagined environments, using flowers, animals, geometric patterns, and decorative symbols to create psychological spaces around the body. These motifs function as extensions of emotion- suggesting tenderness, growth, desire, vulnerability, and transformation. Krill is interested in the tension between the recognizable and the surreal, keeping her figures grounded, while their surroundings become increasingly symbolic and dreamlike. Through expressive brushwork and layered color, she embraces imperfections and ambiguity to retain a sense of intimacy and discovery concerning the emotional, symbolic, and contradictory, experience of being a person.

Samantha is inspired by the architecture, culture and history in Troy; antique patterns, intricate iron gates, crumbling churches, vintage round ups, and seasonal gardens. Authors such as Miranda July, Joan Didion, and Mary Oliver inspire her to reflect on how the world around her relates to her, as if she was water and all of these things tinted her like paint on a brush. They remind her that she is minute and grand. Krill is a collector of vintage books and clothing, an avid reader, a devoted cat Mom, and spends her days as a Preschool Teacher at AMC Kids.
